Some Basic Dos and Don'ts in Web Design

Do:

  • Do provide all measurements in both metric and English standard.
    • (For example, if you are using inches also provide the equivalent in centimeters.)
  • Do label all images with an alt tag and a short description.
    • this provides accessibility for browser readers.
  • Do use file names for your images and file that are descriptive.
    • This will help the browser spiders find your images and files in a search, thereby helping to raise your page rank and get more visitors.
  • Do provide contact information.
    • At a minimum this should include a working e-mail address.
    • I would also suggest providing a phone number and an address (if the address is not a private residence) so that visitors feel more secure in the validity of the company.
  • Do indicate the last time that the site was updated.
  • Do promote new additions and changes to the site on the home page.
    • How else will people know you have made changes or added pages?
  • Do double check your spelling and grammar. We all make mistakes so double check triple check and have your friends check.

Don't:

  • Don't use symbols to indicate measurement.
    • They might be displayed incorrectly on a different browser.
  • Don't use slang.
    • Slang is specific to a culture or a peer group and might be misinterpreted.
    • It also makes you look unprofessional.
  • Don't use flashing buttons
  • Don't use annoying sounds that can not be turned off.
